Introduction What is Convergence Cultures?

Media scholar Henry Jenkins defines convergence cultures in his 2008 book ‘Convergence Culture: Where Old and New Media Collide’ as

‘where old and new media collide’  (Jenkins, 2008, pg 2)
and in 2006, he used his blog (http://henryjenkins.org/) to define the topic as
‘the flow of content across multiple media platforms’ (Jenkins, 2006)

For this research file, I will be exploring how the American Kardashian-Jenner family fit into and represent Jenkins' ideology.

Who are the Kardashian-Jenner family?

The Kardashian-Jenner family is an American family headed by Kris Jenner (former wife of Armenian attorney and businessman Robert Kardashian) and Caitlyn Jenner (formally Bruce Jenner, gold-winning Olympian). Kris Jenner has four children (Kourtney, Kim, Khloé and Robert) with Robert Kardashian and two children (Kendall and Kylie) with Caitlyn Jenner.

The Kardashian-Jenner family, largely known for their reality show 'Keeping Up With The Kardashians, or KUTWK as it's more commonly referred as, showcases both the family's personal and public lives.
Although they are known for the show each family member has created their own media empire from the eldest member Kris Jenner (60) to the youngest member Kylie Jenner (18)

Kris Jenner

Eldest member of the family, Kris Jenner, has a large impact upon the media empire the Kardashian-Jenner family, as well as being the mother of the family she is also each member’s manager or ‘momager’ as the family calls her. Jenner (née Houghton and formerly Kardashian) has also made her own media empire for herself alongside her children, having being in the public eye over ten years before Keeping Up With The Kardashians first aired, due to her connection to the famous O.J. Simpson murder trial – she was a friend of Nicole Brown and was married to Simpson’s lawyer Robert Kardashian.

The main reality show 'Keeping Up With The Kardashians' first aired in 2007, with its eleventh season premiering last year in 2015. The show follows the life of mainly the five Kardashian-Jenner sisters showcasing both family problems and their lives as celebrities constantly in the media's spotlight.

However, as well as the original KUTWK, there have also been several spin-off shows following the same format, two of which are still on air. The first followed the eldest Kardashian sister Kourtney and the youngest Kardashian sister Khloé as the two of them moved to Miami in 2009 titled 'Kourtney and Khloé Take Miami', the reality show went on to have three seasons and even a web series centred around Scott Disick, Kourtney’s previous long time boyfriend, but is no longer available online.

'I Am Cait', is a more recent related show first aired in 2015 with its second season premiering in March 2016. The show, which follows the same reality show format as KUTWK and its spin-off shows follows Caitlyn Jenner post-transition and her adjustment to her new way of life including her relationships with friends and family, her role within the transgender community and her impact within the LGBTIQA+ community.

Youngest Kardashian sister, Khloé, has also made a name for herself away from KUTWK and the spin-off shows she appeared in. In 2016, Khloé began hosting her own chat show titled 'Kocktails with Khloé' which premiered in American on FYI, which featured Kardashian alongside various celebrity guests each week.
Although the show was cancelled after just one season Denise Petski, writer for the entertainment news site 'Deadline', reported that the first episode of 'Kocktails with Khloé' broke the ‘Ratings Record For FYI’ gaining ‘496,000 total viewers’.
